Assessment of macroscopic models of Traffic Flow

The work discussed in this paper consists of a statistical assessment of various finite difference schemes for approximating macroscopic models of traffic flow. Using VISSIM we simulated traffic flow on a section of a freeway with arbitrary characteristics. VISSIM is a traffic flow simulator that uses a microscopic model for traffic. By using data from a microscopic simulation, we are able determine which finite differencing scheme provides the best fit statistically. Since traffic flow control design is based on macroscopic models, it is necessary to verify that the macroscopic model being used by the designer is the most appropriate one. The work covered in this paper addresses this issue by providing a method that can be used to determine which model is appropriate for the simulated or experimental data in question.
